MOTH CLOTH
The skull on its thorax, and subsequent literary associations with the supernatural and evil have fostered superstitious fear and bad omens on the death's-head hawkmoth.
Of the genus 'Acherontia', its species names 'atropos', 'lachesis' and 'styx' are all from Greek myth and related to death. Sharing a tawny colour palette, the everlasting properties of human hair, make it an appropriate medium to capture one, albeit ten times larger.
(2017) felted human hair: 520 x 1050 x 10 mm
